A moment in Orvieto...

Orvieto is another gorgeous city on a hill. Unfortunately, it was late and we only stopped in for a moment. It was sunset, so the lighting was absolutely beautiful.

The Orvieto Duomo, or cathedral, was the most elaborate I think I saw out of all. The detail was astounding.

I didn't get a great shot of the sides of the cathedral, and now I regret it. All of the sides and back of this magnificent building are done in this stripe. It is white travertine and greenish-black basalt. Pretty cool and modern looking.

I couldn't get a shot of the city from a distance, but here is a nifty little "welcome" sign that shows you the city, somewhat (click on it to see better). It is built on these sheer rock cliffs. Darn the time constraints!

The city was pretty fun to wander around in. I would definitely put this on my list to return to someday.

This is a view from the top of the city gates.

The countryside at sunset was stunning. I just wish I had hiked up the hill with my tripod, the pictures aren't as great without one.

You are right--the detail is UNBELIEVABLE. Talk about contrasts: compare some of our chrome, steel, flat, boring structures of today with any one of those buildings in your photos, and it blows my mind. Thanks for sharing! I'm looking forward to more :)
